Football is undoubtedly the most popular game in the world. This popularity has resulted in a huge competition for world dominance of the sport by various football clubs with their owners showing their willingness to break the bank in order to sign the best players.

We take a look at the 10 most expensive transfers in football so far.

#10Luis Suarez with a transfer fee of €82 million

Spanish giants Barcelona coughed out a cool €82 million to sign Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez from English giants Liverpool FC. This deal paid off as Suarez has since been a goal scoring machine for Barcelona, lifting the European Golden Shoe in the 2015-16 season.

#9 Virgil van Dijk with a transfer fee of €84.5 million

In an effort to bolster their squad, English giants Liverpool FC spent €84.5 million to sign Dutch defender Virgil van Dijkfrom fellow English team Southampton FC. So far, this is the highest fee ever spent on a defender.

When Spanish giants Real Madrid spent a whopping €94 million to sign prolific Portuguese goal scorer Cristiano Ronaldo from English giants Manchester United back in 2009, it was the highest ever transfer fee in history. This figure has since been dwarfed by other transfers.

#5 Gareth Bale with a transfer fee of €100 million

In 2013, Spanish giants Real Madrid bought Welsh winger Gareth Bale from English club Tottenham Hotspurs for €100 million, making him the world’s most expensive player. This figure has since been dwarfed by other transfers.

In 2016, English giants Manchester United spent a whopping €105 millionto sign French midfielder Paul Pogba from Italian giants Juventus.  At the time, the deal was a world transfer record.

Spanish giants Barcelona spent a cool €105 million to sign 20-year-old sensation OusmaneDembele from German giants Borussia Dortmund. This deal remains the most expensive deal yet by a German club.

English giants Liverpool FC sold their prolific Brazilian playmakerPhilippe Coutinhofor a cool €120 million to Spanish giants Barcelona. According to reports, this fee could further increase to €160 million if the player meets certain milestones.

#1 Neymar with a transfer fee of €222 million

Topping the list with an audacious transfer fee is Brazilian striker Neymar who was bought from Spanish giants Barcelona by French giants Paris Saint-Germainfor a world record fee of €222 million, making him the world’s most expensive footballer.

These audacious transfer fees have caught the attention of FIFA which is believed to be working on rules to bring sanity back to the transfer market.
